creating overlays

Okay, so a few days ago I gave a little mini-lesson on creating quotes to put in the middle of a blog post and today we’re talking about creating overlays. An overlay is something you’d add to the top of a photo. I love having quotes on my pictures and I love making cards. Sometimes I want words on my cards. Adding words can be time-consuming and so I’ve created some generic sayings that can go on many different types of cards. Here are the instructions if you’d like to attempt it yourself. (it’s super easy!)

First, you have to have an overlay. You can either create one of your own or download them from different spots on the internet. I’ll be posting a link to some tomorrow for you. But in the meantime, you just need to:

Create a document by going to File and then New. For dimensions, choose whatever size you’re hoping your quote picture will turn out to be.
Make the background white or black or just leave it blank.
Save your file as a jpg

Now you’re ready to add your quote to your photo. Follow the instructions below:

Select the photo you want your overlay to be on (do all of your edits)
In Photoshop, go to File and then Place Embedded in the main menu

Find the folder where your overlay is located and click on it, then select ‘place’
Your image is now within the layers panel. Make sure the quote layer is on top of your original photo by clicking on it and dragging it up.
The overlay should have the transforming handles on it. Click on one corner to resize it to the size you want and move it to where ever you want on your image.
