Resizing Images

and still keeping the viewing quality

Resizing an image can be a challenging thing to do. Lightroom is my software choice when it comes to editing. I also use Photoshop, but only for certain things.

Recently I entered a competition and the images needed to be under 400 kb. Believe it or not, this is a difficult thing to do, especially when your images begin at around 15 or so mb.

In Lightroom, once you've selected the folder you want your image exported to and the filename (if you're changing it) look for File Settings and Image Sizing.

  • File Settings:
    • I keep mine as a JPEG and sRGB.
    • You can change the quality to something lower than 100.
    • You can limit the File Size to the size you need
  • Image Sizing
    • Set the image's Long Edge, I keep mine at 1080 pixels.
    • Resolution 300

When the image above is resized at a quality of 100, it was 509 kb. I reduced the quality to 80 and it is now 267 kb.  Either is a good size for a web image.
