According to the dictionary, trust is … a firm belief in the reliability, truth, ability, or strength of someone or something. It takes a lot to trust someone … it’s interesting though because we trust things that humans have made, such as cars, airplanes, bridges … we trust that they won’t crash, they’ll keep us safe, they won’t fall apart while driving on them. But then it’s difficult to trust in God.
He is the one and only who keeps us safe. He is able to keep us from danger and harm. He is able to set us free from things that bind us. These are hard statements. We know that people get hurt and end up in dangerous situations. We know that people are bound and some never get free. Unfortunately, because of this world we live in, there are those situations that happen.
If you’ve never trusted in God, it can be a difficult concept. I’ll tell you some of my experience in learning to trust Him …
In the early days of my salvation … okay, how about the very first day … I’d found myself in a situation that I’d never been in in my whole life. My life was at stake. I had lost control of who I was. My father in law told me to trust in Jesus and He would help me. I still didn’t know what that meant, but I said I would. I had to. There was nothing else I could do. Later that day, the man, who became my pastor gave me some verses from the Bible and told me to write them down on a piece of paper and keep them close by where I was. He said if I read them when I was having difficulty and believed them that God would help me.
So then began the process of me learning to trust in God. When I became afraid or felt as though control of me was being given over to someone or something other than me, I would read the verses. Over time, I noticed that a peace came over me and I realized that reading those words was helping me. Not only were they giving me peace but they were developing a trust in God that I didn’t know existed.
I don’t know where you are in your life, but trusting in the Lord for your situations will help. It may take some time, but He always helps those who call on Him. I encourage you to call on Him today!
